Dedicated to the One I Love: Mourning & Melancholia in the Comment Section is a conceptual art book about music, memory, comments, and communities, edited by Jordan Spencer.
The book collages together hundreds of voices from around the world to tell the story of mourning and reminiscing in the modern age. Taking the form of a mixtape, the book is split into 50 chapters, each named after a song. The songs are often radio hits from around the 1950s to the 1980s, the kind of songs that for certain generations elicit memories of past and lost love, younger days and wild times, and the friends and family lost since. At time these comments are heartbreaking tales of tragedy and loss but just as often they are the kind of stories an uncle might tell when his favorite song comes on and he remembers the car he used to drive.
The comment fields of these 50 songs were tirelessly combed over the course of three years. Thousands of comments were sifted through to find the kind of gems that here illustrate a new way of honoring and remembering.
